Endeavor Founder Stories | Episode 9: Barry Swartzberg, Co-Founder of Discovery

Barry Swartzberg: From Curiosity to Discovery – Building a Business on Opportunity and Ethics

Early Life and Background
Barry grew up in Krugersdorp, in a family that valued hard work and curiosity. His father was entrepreneurial, running motor vehicle trading businesses, and his mother was a dance teacher. From an early age, Barry excelled academically and enjoyed learning, sports, and intellectual challenges. He describes himself as inquisitive and “pretty nerdy,” especially in subjects like math and computer science.

Education and Career Start
Barry initially pursued computer science at UCT but was encouraged to explore actuarial science through a bursary offered by Liberty Life, thanks to a mentor who recognized his aptitude for math. This shifted his path to actuarial science at Vitz University, combining his love for computer science with actuarial research. Early mentorship and opportunities in research and development at Liberty Life shaped his skills, fostering his entrepreneurial mindset.

Entrepreneurial Mindset and Approach to Opportunity
A central theme in Barry’s story is his willingness to say “yes” to opportunities. He values openness, curiosity, and taking calculated risks, even in uncertain situations. This approach has guided him in business, whether exploring new markets like China or evaluating innovative ideas within Discovery.

Founding Discovery
Barry co-founded Discovery as part of Momentum Health, which was initially funded by Rand Merchant Bank. The name “Discovery” was chosen to reflect a spirit of pioneering and innovation. The company evolved from a health-focused subsidiary into a standalone entity, expanding globally under the Discovery brand and its international arm, Vitality.

Leadership and Growth
As Discovery grew, Barry’s role shifted from hands-on building to guiding people and shaping culture. He emphasizes ethics, doing business the right way, and balancing passion with measured judgment. Learning to channel his energy effectively has been a key part of his leadership journey.
